CBEST stands for California Basic Educational Skills Test and is designed to test basic reading, mathematics, and writing skills of those who would like to pursue a career in education. They will assist you with reviewing all the English and math concepts covered by the test and also instruct you in time management and test taking strategies.

The preparation for CBEST always starts with a free assessment test very similar with the official CBEST test administered by the Pearson Education. The scores of the CBEST assessment is the base of the teaching preparation strategy by the tutor to cover your gaps in knowledge, improve the test taking strategies and build confidence.

CBEST has 3 different sections – Reading, Math and Writing. The Reading and Math sections have each 50 multiple-choice questions and the Writing Sections has 2 essays. Calculators are not permitted during the test. The Reading and Writing sections are 1 hour and 30 minutes per section and the Math section is 2 hours long.

CBEST can be taken as computer based in a test center or as online proctoring. Regardless of the method of testing chosen by the candidate, the results are released within two weeks of testing.

The passing score is 123 for all 3 sections of CBEST. The minimum passing score for any section is as low as 37, as long as the total score is 123. The scaled scores for CBEST range from 20 to 80 for each section. The passing score on each CBEST section is a scaled score of 41.

The questions in the Reading section of CBEST evaluate the ability to understand information from written passages, tables and graphs from a variety of areas. However, the questions don’t require outside knowledge, as all the questions related to a text can be answered based on the information from that text.

The Math section of CBEST evaluates the skills of estimation, measurement, statistical principles, computation and problem solving, numerical and graphic relationships. Most of the problems are presented as word problems.

Passing CBEST can open the road to work in education and keep in mind that you only need to pass CBEST once! The scores are valid indefinitely for all credential and employment purposes.
